Mormons Take on Science

Mormons Take on Science

Science vs. Mormonism

I love science.  I studied it extensively in school.  Some of the modern Mormon Apostles have also studied science and made careers out of it.  Why is it that the Mormon Church has leaders that say science is wrong, especially when there is evidence that science is right and proven to be correct?

There is a book written by the late Mormon Apostle Bruce R McKonkie, called Doctrinal New Testament Comentary. Look it up, you can find this book for purchase online.  In this book, McKonkie talks about no death of anything prior to 6000 years ago.  No death including plants or animals. Well, this is a problem. What about all of the fossils that date back millions of years ago through the different geological time periods?  This is so baffling to me, that I don’t even know what more to say about this.  With all of the scientific evidence and fossil records, how could someone say there was no death prior to 6000 years ago?  I guess all of those fossils I collected and found as a kid are nothing more than natural phenomena.  Look into this no death before the fall of Adam and Eve, and you will find similar comments by other Mormon Apostles and Prophets including Joseph Fielding Smith, and Heber J Grant.

Not too long ago, a friend of mine brought up the fact that there has never been anything found regarding the great battle that killed over 200,000 people at the Hill Camorah where the Gold Plates were retrieved by Joseph Smith.  (Read my blog post “How the Book of Mormon Was Translated”.)  Here is a huge number of people who were in battle, and there is nothing to show the battle took place.  No archeological evidence of any kind.  No bones, no artifacts of weapons that would have been used during that time period, etc… Now if there was no death prior to 6000 years ago, why is it that scientists and archeologists are able to find tools and weapons that date back well beyond 6000 years ago?  How is it we have evidence of Neanderthals that lived on the earth prior to 6000 years ago? Anyway,  I find it very strange that all of the evidence of such a large battle left nothing behind to show or prove it ever happened.

Researching DNA and Mormonism is a fun one.  I grew up and was constantly taught that native South Americans are the direct descendants from the Book of Mormon people and they migrated from the Middle East.  Very interesting since science now shows through DNA that the DNA lineage traces back to Asia, not the Middle East.  For those of you reading this and have not studied science, I will mention that there are multiple types of DNA.  We have the DNA everyone thinks about, which are out genes.  We then have mDNA and rDNA.  mDNA is especially good at tracking lineage through the mother.

There are many Mormon church leaders who studied science and medicine.  I wonder what the Mormon leaders think of the scientific evidence that has come out and disproves some of the Mormon Church teachings.

I have mentioned only a couple of things regarding Mormonism and science.  It makes me wonder why the Mormon Church will refute scientific evidence with no explanation; but Joseph Smith was into folk magic with his water sticks and peep stone that he put in a hat to find buried treasure and also charged people for his treasure hunting bull shit business. Maybe Joseph Smith is a genius since he was able to get people to pay him as he put a rock in his hat as he stared at it. Heck, pay me $5 and I’ll put a rock in my hat and stare at it.  Pay me $25 and I’ll take my picture as I have my face buried in my hat staring at a rock.  $35 and I will even tell you what I see.  I hope you have fun looking up these few things I’ve mentioned.

The Mormon Church was founded by a guy that stared at a rock and claims it showed him treasure.  The Mormon Church will believe in the founding Prophet Joseph Smith and magic, but not scientific evidence.  Also, why does the Mormon Church teach all of the science it doesn’t believe at its school, Brigham Young University (BYU)?
